The ad that made grown engineers cry.
You
remember McDonnell Douglas, creators of such legendary aircraft as the
DC-3, the F-4, the F-15, , the DC-10, the F/A-18, and the Delta II Rocket? This
campaign was designed to instill corporate patriotism among the tens of
thousands of McD employees. When the spots, narrated by Jessica Walter, were shown to 10,000
engineers in the company's vast hangar in St Louis, there was not a dry eye in
the house.
The campaign was so successful that McDonnell Douglas's fiercest
rival, Boeing, was moved to merge with it—tears in its own eyes, of
course. The new merged company’s name? Boeing.
