One of my first accounts to work on was Northrop, in my first job at an ad agency, Needham Harper & Steers. They hired me right out of Art Center, not because of that so much as because of my experience as a Naval Air Intelligence Officer (then still in a reserve status) and my intimate knowledge of defense and aerospace, a subject I can't seem to get away from to this day.
Nevertheless, I still applied what I had learned in the Navy and Art Center about persuasion to talk directly to pilots.
These were some of the first professional ads I developed. This first one presented a puzzle, demonstrating how hard it was to spot these F-5s, even in this still picture. They are well within missile or gun range (about one kilometer). And closing with at you at incredible speed. By the time you would see them, it would be too late.
